Ted Cruz Stung by New Texas Poll

Polls show Cruz with a lead over Colin Allred

Ted Cruz is facing an uphill battle in his bid for reelection to the U.S. Senate, according to a new poll released Thursday by Emerson College. The survey found Cruz polling at 42 percent among likely voters in a hypothetical matchup against Democratic challenger Colin Allred, who is polling at 48 percent.

The poll is the latest in a series of surveys that have shown Cruz trailing Allred in the race. A poll released last month by the University of Texas at Austin found Allred leading Cruz by 5 points, while a poll released earlier this month by Quinnipiac University found Allred leading by 4 points.

The Emerson College poll was conducted from Feb. 23-26 and surveyed 800 likely voters in Texas. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

Cruz has a 7.4 lead based on 11 polls

Despite the recent polls showing him trailing Allred, Cruz still has a narrow lead in the RealClearPolitics average of polls. The average, which takes into account all publicly available polls conducted in the past month, shows Cruz leading Allred by 7.4 points.

However, the RealClearPolitics average also shows that Cruz's lead has been shrinking in recent weeks. In early February, Cruz was leading Allred by more than 10 points. But that lead has since narrowed to just 7.4 points, which is within the margin of error for most polls.

Cruz's approval rating has been on a steady decline in recent years. According to a poll conducted by the University of Texas at Austin in October 2015, Cruz had a 53% approval rating among Texas voters. But that rating has since fallen to 42%, according to the Emerson College poll released Thursday.

The decline in Cruz's approval rating is likely due to a number of factors, including his support for former President Donald Trump, his opposition to the Affordable Care Act, and his vote to acquit Trump in his impeachment trial.

Conclusion

The new Emerson College poll is a wake-up call for Cruz. If he wants to win reelection, he needs to start making some serious changes to his campaign. He needs to find a way to appeal to more voters, and he needs to do it quickly.
